Big Data Center for Technology-Mediated Education

The Centre for Big Data on Technology-Mediated Education at Beijing Normal University is an initiative that is being funded by the Chinese government for a three-year term. Located within the Research Centre for Distance Education, the Centre will be internationally oriented and include partners from other organizations around the world. The purpose of the Centre is to support collaborative projects to inform theory, policy, teaching, learning and assessment, as well as to improve efficiencies, outcomes and understanding in the broad area of technology-mediated education. The Centre will operate as a collaborative milieu and bring together scholars and practitioners to implement learning initiatives and to facilitate and conduct research on big data. The outlook is transnational and will promote interdisciplinary collaboration.

About Beijing Normal University

Research Centre for Distance Education

Beijing Normal University Research Centre for Distance Education (RCDE) is one of the first institutions to conduct research on distance education in Mainland China. The RCDE developed from the TV & Communications Research Group which was part of the Electronics Department at BNU. The Research Group started to work on distance education research in the late 1980s, and later in 1995 developed into a Research Centre for Education and Information Engineering. In 2000, the Centre was renamed to reflect a main focus towards distance education. RCDE is the only accredited institute that offers Masters and PhD Programme in Distance Education in Mainland China.

For over 30 years, RCDE has been continuously pursuing research on theories of distance education as well as methods to solving educational problems in practice. As well as developing applications of digital learning technology to support distance educational programmes, the RCDE offers students training courses, academic support programmes and policy consultancy in the field of distance education.
